MB UNIQUE FEATURES

  1. Independent Side Movementâ„¢ (independent movement of parts). Many Myler bits feature a cylindrical roller in the middle of the mouthpiece that acts like a sleeve, allowing independent movement of each side of the bit. When a rider using a Myler bit with ISM applies pressure with a single rein, they raise only one side of the bit, giving the horse a very clear, precise signal.
  2. Anatomic mouthpiece. Mouthpieces in Myler bits have a distinct curve. This leaves more room for the tongue resting under the bit, allowing the horse to swallow more freely than with straight-mouthed bits.
  3. Mouthpiece thickness. Most Myler bits are 11.11mm thick, allowing the mouthpiece to fit comfortably in the horse’s mouth. In traditional bits, we offer a choice of mouthpieces that are 14mm thick at the cheeks and taper to a thickness of 11.11mm in the center of the mouth. This provides action over a slightly larger surface area at the corners and lips, while still leaving plenty of room for the tongue in the center of the mouth.
  4. Mouthpiece metals. All Myler western-style mouthpieces, combination bits, and Cradle bits are made of “sweet iron” with copper inlays. In a moist environment, this metal oxidizes, creating a sweet taste in the horse’s mouth. After a few uses, the bit turns a grey color. All traditional-style mouthpieces are made of stainless steel with copper inlays (with the exception of bits with cheek rings, which are offered in both stainless steel and sweet iron versions).
  5. Slots. Myler bits are equipped with unique elements called “slots.” These are additional openings (in traditional ring bits) or loops (in western D-ring bits) that hold the bit in place and allow two ways of attaching the reins. If the rider attaches the reins directly to the ring instead of the slot, they achieve standard rein action. If, however, the rider attaches the reins to the slot or the additional opening, they can increase the rein action on the cheek and utilize the independent side movement of the mouthpiece elements (ISM). The leverage ratio of the shanks to the parts above the mouthpiece still remains 1:1, so the force exerted on the horse’s mouth stays the same or only slightly greater. Traditional eggbutt or D-ring bits additionally feature a slot at the top of the ring, allowing the rider to attach a curb chain using a quick link (not possible with western D-ring bits with slots).
  6. Small slots for attaching a chin strap in all models with slots, which ensures the proper action of the bit by adjusting the angle of the mouthpiece alignment.
  7. Independent Swivel. The Independent Swivel is a patented Myler feature offered on certain types of bits. Myler shanks work independently of the purchase, and the independent swivel system allows the part above the bit to move independently of the mouthpiece: when the rider engages one rein, they move the shank, but because the purchase rotates slightly, it helps reduce pressure on the horse’s mouth during bit movements. The Independent Swivel is offered in combination bits, Parelli curb bits, HBT bits, and curbs with Flat shanks.
